TEFTY Pool Party and White Water Rafting Trip

Snacks, friends, a pool…what better way to end your summer? The pool party for TEFTY members will be this Sunday, August 17th from 3-5PM. Snacks will be provided. The pool party will be held at 7235 Chattahoochee Bluff Drive, Atlanta, GA 30350. Please remember to bring in membership forms and dues, as well as the white water rafting form to reserve your spot.

TEFTY would like to invite all members, prospective members and their parents to enjoy a day white water rafting along the Ocoee River on Sunday, August 31st. Please join us for a day of excitement and adventure! Everyone will meet at Temple Emanu-El at 7AM with an expected return time around 3PM. Price per person is $35, lunch and snacks are included. Selichot Tryouts

The Gates Are Closing, and it will be the highlight of this year’s Selichot observance on Saturday, September 20. No less an authority than Rabbi Kushner has called it “an inspiring and moving introduction to the Holy Day season” and I’d like to invite you to try out for it.

The production will be in the format of a radio show. So scripts will be in hand, very little will need to be memorized, there will be minimal staging and only three or four rehearsals. We’re casting for twelve parts.

If you’re interested, come to tryouts on Sunday, August 17, 7 PM, at George Fox’s home (5275 Wyntercreek Ct) or on Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30 PM at the temple. Don’t bother preparing anything; you’ll be briefed on parts of the script and do those parts.

The rehearsals for the cast will be held at the temple at 7 PM on the following dates: Thursday, September 4; Thursday, September 11; Sunday, September 14; and Tuesday, September 16. (If necessary, a fifth rehearsal will be held on Thursday, September 18 – but a talented cast of Emanu-El members shouldn’t need that extra practice.)

Organizing Students for Academic Success

August 21 at 7PM at TE - “Organizing Students for Academic Success” is a free parent education seminar developed by two professional organizers specializing in the brain function’s impact on individual student’s academic organizing needs. The overall goals for the seminar are to guide students toward a more successful school year as well as to help them develop life skills for continued success. More specifically, the discussion includes kids’ struggles today, children’s individual learning styles and various organizational systems that address each child’s unique personality and learning style. Mitzvah Project

For his mitzvah project, Jack Sharfstein, son of Mary Francell-Sharfstein and Howard Sharfstein, is raising money to buy mosquito nets to help prevent malaria in Ethiopia through the North American Committee on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ). According to Jack, 15.3 million people get malaria in Ethiopia each year. You can help reduce that number by donating $5 to buy a mosquito net for a child in Ethiopia. The current conflict in the Republic of Georgia and South Ossetia has brought danger and fear to the doorstep of the Jewish community there. I want to let you know that the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta is making a difference in this emergency. JFGA — through our support of our overseas partners the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and The American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) — is offering immediate assistance to Jews affected by the conflict, coordinating evacuations and providing medical assistance, food, and shelter. New Prayer Books

Time for a change? Time to change Prayer books that is…In August, Temple Emanu-El will begin using Mishkan Tefillah, the new Prayer book of the Reform movement. During our summer casual Shabbat Services, we will be discussing and studying the new Prayer book and ways that its use will enhance our spiritual experience. Each week’s lesson will be made available, in shortened form, on our website. On Friday, August 15th at 8PM, we will be dedicating our new prayer book. This book is a generous donation from Temple Emanu-El’s Brotherhood.

Selichot Tryouts

The Gates Are Closing, and it will be the highlight of this year’s Selichot observance on Saturday, September 20. No less an authority than Rabbi Kushner has called it “an inspiring and moving introduction to the Holy Day season” and I’d like to invite you to try out for it.

The production will be in the format of a radio show. So scripts will be in hand, very little will need to be memorized, there will be minimal staging and only three or four rehearsals. It’s not a musical; so solo singing is not an issue. We’re casting for twelve parts.

If you’re interested, come to tryouts on Sunday, August 17, 7 PM, at George Fox’s home (5275 Wyntercreek Ct) or on Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30 PM at the temple. Don’t bother preparing anything; you’ll be briefed on parts of the script and do those parts.

The rehearsals for the cast will be held at the temple at 7 PM on the following dates: Thursday, September 4; Thursday, September 11; Sunday, September 14; and Tuesday, September 16. (If necessary, a fifth rehearsal will be held on Thursday, September 18 – but a talented cast of Emanu-El members shouldn’t need that extra practice J)

Mitzvah Project

For his mitzvah project, Jack Sharfstein, son of Mary Francell-Sharfstein and Howard Sharfstein, is raising money to buy mosquito nets to help prevent malaria in Africa through the North American Committee on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ). According to Jack, 15.3 million people get malaria in Ethiopia each year. You can help reduce that number by donating $5 to buy a mosquito net for a child in Ethiopia. The Amit Program will sponsor an educational conference, along with event sponsors Interfaith Disability Connection (IDC), the Shepherd Center and First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta on Sunday, August 3 at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. “That All My Worship – Beyond the Ramp” will focus on how religious communities can make their services and programs more accessible to those with disabilities. Topics will go beyond eliminating physical barriers and discuss creating services and programs in which all members can easily participate. The program will feature a box lunch, speakers and breakout sessions. The fee for the conference is $25.00 or $5.00 for people with disabilities and their family members. The event will be led by Rabbi Lynne Landsberg, Reverend Al Mead, Imam Furqan Muhammad and Ginny Thornburgh; four leaders in religion and disability education. Leaders in religious communities and disability communities, advocates and friends are invited to take part in this conference on religion, acceptance, and inclusion. Attendees will gain the knowledge, resources and motivation to make positive changes in their religious communities. Time for a change? Time to change Prayer books that is… In August, Temple Emanu-El will begin using Mishkan Tefillah, the new Prayer book of the Reform movement. During our summer casual Shabbat Services, we will be discussing and studying the new Prayer book and ways that its use will enhance our spiritual experience. Each week’s lesson will be made available, in shortened form, on our website.

The Amit Program is looking for individuals who love working with young children and who have a little extra time on their hands. The Jewish community of Atlanta is very fortunate to have so many preschools that are accepting of children with special needs. However, many of these children can only attend the preschools if they are accompanied by a shadow. A shadow is an individual who spends the day with the child in the classroom helping them to interact with the other children and participate in all activities.

Brotherhood Golf Tournament
The Brotherhood Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 16 at Chateau Elan. The cost to play is $125 per golfer. Hole sponsorships are $1,250 and include four playing slots. All proceeds go to support the creation of a Brotherhood Scholarship Fund, which will offer grants and loans to Temple Emanu- El families to help offset the high cost of college. The Dekalb Rape Center is looking for dedicated volunteers to staff their 24-hour crisis line and serve as hospital companions for rape survivors. The Summer 2008 Training begins on June 10, 2008. They are also looking for RAINN Online Hotline volunteers, and volunteers to be part of the Speakers Bureau, Outreach and Special Events Committees. Session 3 - A Lilith Exclusive - Is E-dating Good for Jewish Women? An inside look at this modern-day Yenta. A Special Presentation The Torah: A Women's Commentary -- a groundbreaking first women’s commentary to cover all individual Torah portions with multiple interpretations from literary to feminist and from scholarly to artistic. Gift Shop Hours: Judaica Shop hours have switched over to summer hours which are by appointment only. Help with all you needs is only one phone call or email away – please don’t hesitate to call or email!

TE Sisterhood operates a well-stocked, high-quality Judaica Gift Shop as a service to the congregation and a way of raising funds for the synagogue. The shop offers a wide range of items to enhance Jewish holiday celebrations, life-cycle events, and daily life. Celebrate special holidays and Simchas all year round with items from our gift shop.

It is a Tree of Life…and you can be part of it. Located near the memorial wall, it shines in honor of Simchas and each leaf helps Sisterhood. Order forms for leaves and rocks are available in the main office. Cost per leaf is $118 and rocks are $180.

Temple Emanu-El Caring Committee

CARING COMMITTEE – Volunteers are needed to help as occasional substitute callers. It involves contacting congregants to offer assistance while they are experiencing life cycle events.
